Background Preterm labor is a leading cause of fetal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. A lots of medication drugs are used to suppress the preterm labor but they are not effective thoroughly. The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of oral nifedipine with of intravenous magnesium sulfate in delaying the preterm labor.

Methods: Two hundred twenty women with singleton pregnancy at 24-37 weeks of gestation were randomly assigned to receive oral nifedipine or intravenous magnesium sulfate.

Results: Thirty five percent women in the nifedipine group and 23.3% women in the magnesium sulfate group were delayed delivery less than 48 hours. In 3.3% women in the nifedipine group and 6.7% women in the magnesium sulfate group, delivery was delayed between 48 hours to 1 week. There was no significant difference between nifedipine and magnesium sulfate groups in delaying delivery within 48 hours or > 48 hours. Side effects of medication were seen lower in the patients who received oral nifedipine than those received intravenous magnesium sulfate.

Conclusion: Oral nifedipine should be suitable alternative to intravenous magnesium sulfate in delaying preterm labor with fewer side effects.
